The is a debate that many homeowners as well ads roofing companies come across from time to time. Heres some informtion that can hopefully help you make decision the next time you decide to replace your roof.
One of the main reasons for the high cost of metal roofs in the cost of installation. Properly installing a metal roof is a highly involved process that requires special skills, experience and equipment. Galvalume Steel – A slight improvement from G-90 steel, galvalume offers better quality coating, and hence longer lasting protection against corrosion. – It is for this reason, most standing seam panels are manufactured from galvalume steel.
Standing Seam: Prices start at around $450 per per roof square for materials, and $1,000 for materials plus installation, without a roof tear-off.
Aluminum is a step up in quality from steel, providing more long-lasting protection compared to steel roofing.
Aluminum Shingles: This is one of the most popular types of metal roofs installed. Materials prices range between $375.00 – $550.00 per roof square including the trim. Installation starts at around $900 for a basic roof, without a tear-off.
Standing Seam: Prices start at around $500 for materials and $1,100 for installation, without the old roof tear-off.
Copper is a superior quality metal and comes with a very high price tag. You can expect to pay around $900.00 – $1450.00 per square just for the material alone plus the cost of installation, which may be significant if you choose to go with copper standing seam panels requiring soldering together 16oz, or 20oz copper pans.

We are entering a brand new season. The leaves will begin to change, the weather gets cooler and crisp, and we all get a bit more cheery.
Now a new season brings change, it brings something new, a beginning.
As we start a new season let's start by taking care of our roofs and fixing what needs to be fixed. A few great ways to care for your roof during the fall time is one to inspect your roof. Having a roof inspection at least twice a year is the best way to ensure that it will last longer.
Once you have inspected your roof, clean all the debree as this can weigh on your roof, search for any nail pops or lifted shingles, as well as cracks or holes in the shingles. They are very important because inspections evaluate the overall health and function of your roof. 1. Ceiling and Attic
The initial dangers of a roof leak are damage to the attic area and the items that might be stored there. If the leak is not over an attic then it will damage the interior ceiling. Affected ceiling paint will darken and ceiling plaster may bubble and expand. The leaking water also will damage paint and plaster on nearby walls. Your cellulose or fiberglass insulation becomes saturated and it takes a long time for it to dry out. If a roof leak repair is put off for a long time, and water is constantly pouring through, then it will ruin the insulation significantly and your home will lose hot and cool air, resulting in higher utility bills.

1. Excessive Heat: The extreme temperatures can bubble the asphalt around the granules which get looses and begins to age prematurely. In essence the extreme heat begins to attack the shingles.
2. Attic Ventilation: The ventilation below the shingle, especially in the spots where the attic insulation actually touches the roof, cannot cool off as the sun is beating down on the shingle. Always check your ventilation system as this can lead to serious problems as the heat progresses.
3. Starter Strip: If only the bottom row of shingles are curling up before any others right on the edge of the roof, then the technician put on the first layer incorrectly. Always be careful who you permit to do work on your roof. Look for knowledge ,quality. and experience.

This picture should serve as a warning to everyone who has ever been tempted to find cheap labor. Yes it sounds amazing finding someone/company to do the work you need done for a very small price. We jump so quickly that we forget to ask why is it so cheap. Very cheap labor means cheap material and usually a sloppy clean-up. The picture displays different colored shingles throughout the entire roof. Not only is this an eye sore it is also extremely un-professional. Always be careful when receiving bids. Always make sure they have experience, high quality material and labor, warranties.

Common Roofing Problems:
1. Sun - can cause materials to deteriorate over time.
2. Rain - water can get underneath shingles and roof structures which in turn can cause the material to rot.
3.Moss and Algae - Moss can grow on moist shingles and shakes. Once it grows, moss holds even more moisture to a roof system's surface, causing rot.
4. Shingle Deterioration - When shingles are old and worn out, they curl, split and lose their waterproofing effectiveness. This in return causes more damage to spread and weakens the roof systems.
5. Flashing Deterioration - Without good, tight flashings around chimneys, vents, skylights and wall/roof junctions, water can enter a home or building and cause damage to walls, ceilings, insulation and electrical systems.

Problem #1: If water begins standing inside a gutter, it may overflow the inner edge and begin seeping into the fascia boards of the house. Then when the gutters finally do fall, you’ll have to replace both your fascia boards and your gutters.
Problem #2: Leaves, twigs, and other debris that sit in a gutter for a long time can lead to the development of moss or algae. This, in turn, can damage shingles, fascia boards, and other places where wood is present.
Problem #3 Any area where standing water accumulates is a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes and other nagging insects. An abundance of debris will attract squatting rodents and other critters which may eventually decide to explore the interior of your home.
Problem #4: When the water standing in your gutters freezes due to cold weather, it expands the gaps between your shingles and your roof. Then, when it thaws, there’s a convenient gap for water to flow into the home’s interior and damage walls and ceilings
Problem #5: If runoff water starts pooling on your driveway, it can create pits or sags in certain spots (which may eventually turn into cracks). These areas can cause everything from trips and falls to stress (or damage) to your cars.
Problem #6: This is by far the most costly side effect of clogged gutters. A consistent stream of water flowing down to the sides of your home can cause the foundation to buckle, crack, or shift – and it won’t be easy to repair.
